Sierra Leone has had a national programme for clubfoot since 2010, when the first Ponseti for clubfoot training was held in the country. Since then a further two training events have been held. The national programme for clubfoot is run in conjunction with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation along with NGO’s Prosthetics Outreach Foundation, CURE Clubfoot Worldwide and Mercyships.
Foot abduction braces for use with the Ponseti technique are produced in the country in the capital, Freetown.
In 2010 a training course in the Ponseti technique for clubfoot management was held in Freetown, with representatives from Makeni, Freetown, Bo and Kono attending. Subsequent Ponseti training courses were held in 2011 and 2012. Training for community outreach personnel and clubfoot counsellors has also been held.
The national programme is supported by Prosthetics Outreach Foundation and CURE Clubfoot Worldwide for consumables, parent counselling, monitoring and evaluation and training. Mercyships has also provided training as part of the programme.
